The NFU is urging turkey producers to move early in joining the sector’s postcode search tool as a way of connecting with consumers during the run-up to Christmas 2019.
The NFU’s ‘Turkey Finder’ tool attracted over 9,000 views during the first week of December 2018 and the union is aiming to make its 2019 version bigger and better.
“It’s a fantastic free promotional tool for any farm fresh turkey business selling direct to the consumer from the farm gate,” said NFU turkey group chair Michael Bailey, adding that 270 union members are already listed and available to be found by people shopping for their Christmas dinner centrepiece.
“The online postcode search tool is easy to use and directs new customers to farm gate sales, which is beneficial as the highest margins will always be from direct sales at the farm gate.
“It’s also a great way to engage with the public and showcase the high environmental and welfare standards we produce to.”
As a further boost for producers, the union is once again running a competition through its Back British Farming newsletter, with the winner receiving a turkey, selected through the Turkey Finder.
“In 2018, we received over 3,000 entries for the competition,” said Mr Bailey. “The winner experiences the thrill of picking up their turkey from a farm which we hope will then become part of their Christmas tradition and passed on to future generations.”
