Visitors to some of the UK’s major agricultural are being introduced, via a 360-degree immersive video, to what life is like on the Cumbrian farm run by the Lakes Free Range Egg Company.
The viewing experience enables show visitors to feel as if they’re “walking with hens” as they take part in an interactive programme called Follow our Foodsteps, which is being run by McDonald’s UK.
The idea behind the programme is to tell the McDonald’s food story through the eyes of the people who grow, produce and prepare food for their UK menu, with the Lakes business being one of their flagship free range egg suppliers.
A film crew spent several days at the Lakes unit, filming hens in their natural environment to help tell the farm’s story and create a realistic experience. This was then translated into an interactive video for showing at major UK shows and other relevant events around the country.
“From what we saw at the Royal Highland Show (held last month), people really want to know more about where their food comes from,” said the Lakes’ CEO, David Brass (pictured above, enjoying a look at his own farm).
“I know from first-hand experience that food producers in the UK have a passion for what they do, and the standards we set are very high.”
McDonald’s UK supply chain director, Connor McVeigh, added: “As a nation, we have never been more food-focussed. The eating out market is growing but this passion for food is masking a lack of understanding around how food is produced and the vital role our farming and food industries play in growing, sourcing and producing quality ingredients.
“We want to lift the lid on the passion and skills that exist at every stage of the process, from farm to front-counter. Over the last decade we have invited people behind the scenes of our own supply chain on a number of occasions but we wanted to take this even further.”
