This has been a positive month. We at long last had a price rise to help with the costs that seemed to explode last October. With the increase we committed to a four year contract, which some might think is a disadvantage. I do not look at it that way, as with my son now taking over the farm it will give the bank comfort, as he will need to borrow money to build a house which we now have planning for and possibly a new chicken house.
I know some of you will say why have we not joined the exodus to the wholesale market and had an increase that way? Maybe it is because I am a bit long in the tooth, but I did it years ago and it nearly cost me my farm. I know the world is a different place but I will not take the chance. I have also sold my chicken to the present people for 15 years and we enjoy growing the Oakham Gold chicken. Only time will prove if I am correct.
I do wonder when chicken prices will take off in the retailers. Have they learnt nothing from the egg market where I am told a 16,000 free range unit is earning £1,000 per week. And look at other protein prices, with a fat beef animal selling for £2,600, store cattle at £2,000 and even old cows selling for £1,500. Lamb prices are also good, eggs are going up so it is about time chicken moved.
Anyway, we live in fast moving interesting times which should mean plenty of discussion at the South West Conference the biggest for a long time with 50 trade stands and at present 300 plus delegates signed up. Hopefully see you there.
