The impact of inflation on egg and broiler producers is the topic of this month’s Poultry Today podcast, brought to you by Poultry Business magazine.
Host Chloe Ryan is joined by Robert Gooch, chief executive of the British Free Range Producers Association. He represents free range egg producers across the country, most of which sell their eggs to packers at the market price, which fluctuates according to supply. Costs are up significantly year on year, and many producers are now making big losses on their eggs.
Broiler grower Charles Bourns is the other guest. He grows nearly half a million chickens per year for Hook2Sisters and has recently started half house brooding to try and bring some of his costs down.
In the podcast, the guests discuss how nearly every key input – from fuel, to feed, to bedding, to labour – is increasing by double digits at an eye watering pace, and how they are attempting to get a fair price for the food they produce.
