The United States has reported a person hospitalised with severe avian influenza (H5N1) has died, the first case in the country to result in death. There have been 66 confirmed human cases of H5N1 in the past year, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The CDC said no person-to-person transmission has been identified.
Outside the United States, more than 950 cases of H5N1 bird flu have been reported to the World Health Organisation. About half of those have resulted in death.
