EU broiler prices increased slightly during May and into June, averaging 271 eurocents a kg for the week ending 19 June.
Prices were up by 0.2% on last month but are still down by 3.7% on the same month last year.
Broiler prices in the US and EU were almost neck and neck in mid-June at 270 eurocents a kg and 271 eurocents a kg respectively. Meanwhile, broiler prices in Brazil dropped further and were considerably lower at 128 eurocents a kg.
After a strong start to the year for total EU broiler production, volumes were forecast to slip back slightly during May to roughly 800,000 tonnes, putting it back slightly on the month and the year.
Poland accounted for the largest share of the total EU poultry meat production in 2023 at 21%, followed by Spain (13%), Denmark (12%), France (11%), and Italy (10%).
Egg prices
EU egg prices stood at 200.65 eurocents a kg in mid-June, down by 3.1% on the previous month and 16.5% lower than the same month last year.
Egg volumes
The main EU egg producers in 2023 were France, Denmark, and Spain with each accounting for roughly 14% of the total market share, this is followed by Italy at 12%. Total EU egg production was 6.78m tonnes in 2023, which was 0.7% higher than in 2022.
Trade
The UK was the EU’s largest export destination during the first two months of 2024, with 22,383 tonnes of eggs being imported into the UK from the EU. This accounted for more than a third of total EU egg exports.
Ukraine was the largest exporter of eggs to the EU with 10,771 tonnes being imported by the EU from Ukraine during January and February, a 57% increase on the previous year.
The second largest exporter to the EU was the UK with 2,615 tonnes being sent during the first two months of the year.
This was an increase on the same period last year but still well below the volume of eggs imported from the EU by the UK.
