Avara Foods has announced it will no longer sell poultry litter as fertiliser within the catchment of the river Wye, and will instead export it all from the area via Gamber, a company that will sell it to farmers outside the region.
The poultry integrator said the decision had been made as part of the steps it was taking towards restoring the river Wye, and was working “with its partners to ensure our fertiliser doesn’t contribute to damage of the river Wye catchment area”.
The company earlier this year made a commitment that its supply chain would not contribute excess phosphates to the area by 2025. It added that restoring the river Wye would involve participation from others. “We hope our actions inspire others to also make a difference.”
