Vaccination plays an important role in Salmonella prevention but should always be “complemented” with other prevention measures, such as an effective biosecurity programme, says Aviagen’s production programme vet in North America, Dr Kate Hayes.
“We continually strive to protect our valuable breeding stock at Aviagen from the threat of pathogens,” she said, adding that vaccination can be an effective tool to safeguard against disease, but is not enough on its own.
“Vaccination must be administered as a careful supplement to an effective biosecurity programme,” Dr Hayes (pictured above) told delegates at the recent Western Poultry Disease Conference in Vancouver, Canada.
“Biosecurity is imperative to keep our birds healthy and provide the world’s consumers with a steady and sustainable supply of poultry meat.”
In addition to the presentation by Dr. Hayes, the conference also explored avian influenza, salmonella control in general, antimicrobial resistance and disease management.
