2015 Nuffield Scholar, Doug Wanstall, whose study experience focused on free range egg production, will be attending this year’s Pig and Poultry Fair to encourage others to consider applying for a scholarship as a way of contributing to the future of the UK poultry industry.
Mr Wanstall’s involvement at the Fair is part of a Nuffield Farming Scholarship Trust initiative, aimed at “recruiting enthusiastic, progressive and knowledgeable candidates aged between 22-45, who genuinely want to make a change to UK agriculture and their businesses”.
Nuffield says that its Fair team, located on the Aviagen stand, will be on hand to offer feedback on ideas for an application which may be looking at biosecurity, genetics, welfare, nutrition, packaging or even energy options.
“I want to encourage anyone with enthusiasm and ideas for the future of the industry to apply,” said Mr Wanstall. “It’s an amazing experience and offers lifelong opportunities to be engaged in the agricultural community.”
Living and working near Ashford in Kent, Mr Wanstall runs a 145,000-free range laying birds enterprise along with his father and uncle and wife Stephanie. They also have a very busy restaurant and events venue.
