The rapid approach of new rules governing the buying of rodenticides has prompted industry organisations to run two webinars in mid-September as a last-gasp opportunity for farmers to find out what they need to do.
After September 30, all farmers must be able to demonstrate compliance with the UK Rodenticide Stewardship requirements before they are allowed to buy and use bait rodenticides.
There are four options for farmers to take:
- Obtain a certificate
- Demonstrate membership of a CRRU approved farm assurance scheme such as Red Tractor or RSPCA Assured (initially until 2017)
- Employ the services of a professional pest controller
- Buy smaller packs (<1.5kg) – although these have the same active ingredient, these are classed as amateur products.
The webinars, which are directed at the whole farming sector, will take place on Wednesday, September 14, 7-8pm, and Thursday, September 15, 7-8pm.
The two events are part of a rodenticide hub initiative funded by the Agricultural and Horticultural Development Board in partnership with other industry organisations, including British Poultry Council, NFU and NFU Scotland.
The hub also includes a downloadable PDF guide concerning the effective and responsible use of rodenticide bait.
