An all-industry meeting to help decide the UK poultry sector’s post-Brexit priorities has been called by the National Farmers Union (NFU).
The meeting, which will be held at NFU headquarters in Stoneleigh, Warwickshire, on September 8, was originally arranged to allow the union’s poultry members to help establish the NFU’s lobbying priorities. It has now been expanded, however, enable all poultry stakeholders to have their say on the issue.
“Given the significant implications of Brexit, we think it would be a good opportunity to open up the meeting and involve all stakeholders in the poultry sector so that we, as a poultry industry, can discuss and agree a joint industry position on key points,” said the union’s chief poultry adviser, Gary Ford.
“Consequently, we have invited other stakeholders, such as the British Egg Industry Council, the British Poultry Council, the British Free Range Egg Producers Association, the British Poultry Veterinary Association and retailers to join the meeting.”
Mr Ford (pictured above) added that while the sector was entering a crucial and challenging time, it was also a time opportunity for the industry.
“We need to be clear what our members’ priorities are over the coming weeks and months so that we are well placed to lobby government on what we, the British poultry industry, want both in the forthcoming trade negotiations and in a UK agricultural policy,” he said.
