Charles Bourns has been awarded the South West Chicken Association (SWCA) poultry person of the year award at the recent SWCA conference, held on 15 April.
SWCA usually presents this award at its annual Christmas dinner but Bourns was still recovering after heart surgery in December 2023 so he was presented with his award in April this year.
The award was given to Bourns by Richard Smaldon, SWCA chairman and Robert Lanning, former SWCA chairman.
Bourns was given the award for his continuing long service to SWCA and the whole poultry industry.
Robert Lanning said: “Our award winner has been a long serving and active member of SWCA for more than 25 years, he served as chairman from 1999 to 2003 and has been honorary secretary since 2016.
“He is a very well know figure within the industry, having also served for over 40 years on the national NFU Poultry Committee and in the regional NFU. He is a passionate advocate for UK poultry and we owe him huge thanks for all his support, wisdom, hard work and experience that he has given to SWCA and our industry.”
