2 Sisters has confirmed it will close its processing plant at Llanegfni at the end of this month. In January it announced plans to close the factory, which processes large birds predominantly for use in ready meals.
It entered into a consultation with unions over the future of the factory and its 730 staff. The plant needs an estimated £20 million spent to bring it up to date and make it viable, a source from 2 Sisters said. The company’s latest published accounts covering the year to July 31 2021 show a £95.5m loss.
Now the firm has confirmed the closure will go ahead, in a statement. “Regrettably we have reached the stage with our union partners and employee representatives where all parties agree it is unlikely any viable alternative to closure will come forward. Clearly this is very upsetting news for all concerned and a very difficult time for everyone at the factory.
“Our sole and continuing focus are those affected by the forthcoming closure, which is why we will now intensify the support we are putting in place for all colleagues.
“We are hopeful we can update stakeholders in the coming weeks with some positive news on our efforts to redeploy colleagues within our wider business as well as helping them find suitable opportunities outside the company.
“The last day of operation is expected to be March 31.”
