Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 was confirmed on 13 January 2022 in commercial poultry at the following premises:
- near Tattenhall, Cheshire West and Chester, Cheshire
- second premises near Tattenhall, Cheshire West and Chester, Cheshire
A 3km Protection Zone and 10km Surveillance Zone has been put in place around each of the premises. All birds on the infected premises will be humanely culled.
This brings the total number of cases in the UK to 81 this season, by far the worst the country has seen.
A housing order is in place for all birds, which was introduced to try and limit the spread of the disease.
If you suspect any type of avian influenza in poultry or captive birds you must report it immediately by calling the Defra Rural Services Helpline on 03000 200 301. In Wales, contact 0300 303 8268. In Scotland, contact your local Field Services Office. Failure to do so is an offence.
