The 2017 Nuffield International Triennial Conference provides a two-week spotlight on British farming, food and rural enterprise, with a programme of visits and events to showcase the very ‘Best of British’ in farming, food, technology and our diversified rural landscape, inclusive of a one-day industry-first ‘Farming Fit For Food’ conference.
Nuffield Triennial Conference Week
Starting on 3 June 2017, the two-week programme will kick off with an extensive schedule of field tours, visiting numerous leading businesses and pioneering farmers across the country.
As part of the conference week, delegates will have the choice to attend a series of seven themed days – including Great British Food, World Class Innovation, Family Owned: Family Run – followed by sector specific tours focusing on arable, dairy, beef, horticulture and organic farming. Tour highlights include visits to the following businesses: Thatcher’s Cider, Yeo Valley, JCB, Worth Farms, Severn Trent Water, NIAB and G’s Group.
Nuffield Triennial Conference day
The ‘Farming Fit For Food’ Triennial Conference Day – on Thursday 8 June 2017 at the East Midlands Conference Centre – will explore how farming, in partnership with the food industry, can rise to the challenge of changing food and dietary requirements.
The focus of the conference is in response to the rising consumer interest in healthy food options, coupled with the simultaneous rise in diet-related public health issues such as diabetes and obesity, which already costs the NHS £5.2 billion each year and is the third biggest social burden globally.
With the help of world-renowned experts, it will explore the implications of these changing needs on farming, how farmers, the food industry and health professionals can work together to respond to these challenges and the opportunities these new requirements represent.
Speakers include:
- Caroline Drummond MBE, LEAF, who will speak on the topic of healthy food and farming
- Guy Smith, NFU president, who will be involved in the debate on adding value for the farmer through the health agenda
- Duncan Farrington, Farrington’s Mellow Yellow, who will discuss delivering health benefits from commodity crops
- Professor Michael Winter OBE, University of Exeter, who will present on securing farming’s role in the health agenda
