A major avian influenza (AI) outbreak, resulting in the slaughter of 9000 turkeys, has been reported by the Hungarian food safety agency (NÉBIH).
The outbreak was located close to the country’s border with Romania and has already triggered protective measures to prevent the virus from spreading across Europe.
The Hungarian authorities have established a 3 km radius protection zone around the area in which the outbreak took place with a further a 10 km surveillance zone also being established in the area.
Hungary had previously been free of the virus since February this year, following on from other outbreaks in 2015.
The country’s chief vet has initiated a crisis management plan to keep the current outbreak under close control.
